Corneria — Mission 1

Last updated: June 2026

Overview

Corneria is the opening mission of Star Fox 64 and the most important routing stage in the entire campaign. Fox McCloud leads the Star Fox team over Corneria City as Andross's forces launch a ground invasion. This corridor-flying stage introduces core mechanics — charged shots, barrel rolls, loop maneuvers, and wingmate rescue calls — while setting your path for the rest of the game. Every route in Star Fox 64 branches from decisions made here.

On Nintendo Switch 2, Corneria remains unchanged in structure: fly forward through the city, destroy ground and air targets, respond to wingmate distress calls, and defeat the stage boss. Your performance and optional objectives determine whether you proceed to Meteo on the easy route or Sector Y on the hard route.

Route Triggers

Corneria has two exits, making it the campaign's primary fork:

  • Meteo (standard): Complete the mission normally without flying through all seven stone arches. This is the default exit for the easy and medium routes.
  • Sector Y (hard branch): Save Falco when he breaks formation, then fly through every one of the seven stone arches carved into the canyon walls beneath the city. ROB announces the route change after the seventh arch.

The stone arches are easy to miss on a first playthrough. They appear as large ring-shaped tunnels in the canyon section after the city flyover. You must pass through all seven in a single run — partial completion still routes to Meteo. Saving Falco is required for the hard branch; Peppy confirms the rescue with a radio message.

Boss Strategy

Corneria features one of two possible boss encounters depending on your speed and performance:

Granga: A bipedal walker mech that appears if you saved Falco quickly and maintained strong performance. Granga stomps forward and fires missiles from its arms. Shoot the cockpit with charged laser shots and use barrel rolls to deflect incoming projectiles. Granga is the easier of the two bosses.

Attack Carrier: A massive aircraft carrier that deploys fighter squadrons if the team took heavy damage or Falco was not saved promptly. Destroy the fighter bays on each side, then focus fire on the bridge. Smart bombs clear deployed fighters efficiently. The Attack Carrier has more health but follows predictable attack patterns.

Both bosses lead to different second stages depending on whether you cleared the stone arches, not which boss you fought.

Switch 2 Remake Notes

On Nintendo Switch 2, Corneria's canyon section renders with improved draw distance, making the seven stone arches easier to spot against the terrain. Co-op mode lets a second player handle ground targets while the pilot threads the arches — useful for hard route attempts on shared-screen play. Training Mode lets you replay Corneria independently to practice arch routing without restarting the full campaign.

Medal Tips

The Corneria medal requires 150 hits with all four wingmates surviving. Ground targets along the city streets and canyon walls provide the bulk of scoring opportunities. Use charged shots on columns, vehicles, and grouped enemies for multi-hit bonuses. The fountain area near the start offers early points if you destroy the surrounding structures.

Do not sacrifice wingmate health for extra hits — survival is a medal requirement. Clear enemies ahead of Falco and Slippy to prevent them from flying into danger. See the full medal requirements page for Expert Mode unlock conditions.

Wingmate Advice

Falco is the critical wingmate on Corneria because saving him is required for the hard route. When he calls for help over the ocean, break formation briefly to shoot his pursuers, then return to the main path. Peppy provides consistent tactical commentary throughout the stage. Slippy tends to fly into ground fire — destroy turrets and tanks before he reaches them.

On co-op multiplayer, coordinate who handles ground targets versus aerial threats to maximize hit score while keeping everyone alive. The co-op mouse controls guide covers formation flying in shared-screen play.
